Winter Sowing with Wild Ones
Advent Lutheran Church in Arlington, VA
Public Welcome Free Event Chapter Meeting Hands-On/How-To Workshop Public Restroom
Please join us to learn about and plant - native seeds via Winter Sowing! This will be a fun and interactive hands-on activity.
Please either bring the following supplies or please include in your RSVP that you want to have supplies provided to you for a $5 activity fee.
Gallon milk or spring/distilled water jug, potting mix (such as Miracle Grow potting mix), duct tape, plant marker stick, outdoor permanent marker, native seeds.
If you have extra native needs to share, please bring them along.
Please let us know if you want supplies provided so we have the right amount of materials for everyone.
Note: the day before 2/4/23 - there will be a Washington Gardener Seed Exchange at Green Spring Gardens Park Sat, 02/04/2023 12:30 PM - 4:30 PM. If you get seeds there, as our event is a Wild Ones event, please get only native seeds for our activity of winter sowing.
While having fun playing with our hands in the dirt (indoors) we'll also have a meeting and relay information on upcoming events and have participants and members share information.
If you need to have a snack or want to have a beverage, please plan to bring same with you.
If you know friends who are interested in native plants or who might be interested in the NoVA Wild Ones group, please let them know about us and if you invite them and they want to attend, please make sure we know and let us know if they will need activity materials.

Invasive Species Removal in Centreville, VA - Fairfax County Parks

Come help Melinda remove invasive species from the Cub Run Valley Stream Park.
This is a Fairfax County volunteer event that will be attended by 1 or more Wild Ones members.

We will have a small tabling event at this event hosted by Friends of Hollin Hills:
Seeing Doug Tallamy speak about native plants is an opportunity to learn from one of the most respected voices in the field, and to gain a deeper understanding of the many ways that native plants can help to create a healthier, more sustainable world.
This event is open to the greater Northern VA community and is selling out.

Invasive Species Removal at Wakefield Chapel

We'll be helping to remove invasive species from the historic chapel and graveyard. The chapel will be open for restroom use. We will plan to have a short meeting as well.

Designing with Native Plants - Barbara Ryan of Chain Bridge Native Landscapes

Barbara Ryan, of Chain Bridge Native Landscapes, will be talking with us about Native Plant designs, natural plant communities and medicinal uses of native plants.
Barbara will speak for 30 minutes, we'll have a Q&A and then socialize.

Stiltgrass Pull - Cub Run Stream Valley

Come help remove stiltgrass from Cub Run Stream Valley Park. August is the perfect time to pull up Japanese stiltgrass. This plant is invasive in our area and prevents our indigenous American plants from growing and providing food for our local ecosystem. If you love the birds and the bees, come join the fight! Wear long pants and sleeves, gloves and bug repellant! It's fun and easy to pull.
Wildflower Walk
Public Welcome Family Friendly Free Event Nature Walk/Hike Lots of Physical Activity
Come take a walk on the trails in Centreville, VA and see what's blooming! We'll look at the native, non-native and invasive plants in Northern Virginia towards the end of summer. We may be able to do a little seed collection. Please rsvp with [email protected] or on our facebook page.
We will be walking on mostly paved trails, but there is a small section that is mowed slightly uneven ground.

Rescue Native Plants from Accotink Creek
Public Welcome Free Event Plant Salvage/Rescue Public Restroom Free Public Parking Lots of Physical Activity Drinking Fountains
Rescue native plants from a section of Accotink Creek which will be dug up in Spring 2024 for a restoration project. You may take some plants home with you, or help us move them to Kutner Park.
We will spend 1.5 hours digging up and cleaning off native shade plants from the floodplain, and then move to Kutner Park to remove invasives.
Examples of the plants are asters, jack-in-the-pulpit, solomon's seal, partridge berry, sedges, mosses and more.
Wear mosquito repellant, bring a bucket or 2 and some bags to take home your prizes. It is a short walk from the parking lot to the site.

"Creating and Managing Landscapes for Native Bees" with Heather Holm

Join Wild Ones Honorary Director Heather Holm as she explores the nesting habitats, life cycles, pollen collection, brood rearing, and general characteristics of some of the most common native bees in eastern North America, while highlighting the pollination of native plants and the mutualism between native plants and native bees.
When creating and managing thriving habitats for native bees, many factors such as seasonal phenology, nesting strategies, and flower preferences must be considered—and with approximately 3,600 species in North America (north of Mexico), there are many unique aspects to keep in mind when managing successful landscapes for bees.
